Try your local fast food places. I worked at McDonald’s a long time ago, and you want to call and talk with the manager ahead of time. If you just show up and ask for boxes, 9 times out of 10, you’ll walk out empty handed. This is because the majority of people who work in fast-food restaurants break-down the boxes as soon as they become empty. However, if you call and talk with the manager, he/she will allow the other employees to know that someone needs boxes and to save them. The boxes are pretty sturdy and there’s a lot of boxes at the end of the day. I moved not to long ago and that’s where I located most of my boxes. With the supermarkets, it’s the same thing. If you call and talk to a manger they may put aside the boxes and allow you to come and pick them up.

Not sure which country you’re in but I’ve moved a fair bit and go to supermarkets and get their banana boxes which are very strong and have a lid – they’re great and not so big that you can’t lift them when full.
Just read your update. Go into the supermarket and talk to the manager on the fresh produce site – they will hold boxes for you if you ask them and pick them up regularly.

U-Haul rental places have boxes. If you’re not renting from them, you do have to pay for them, but they’re really cheap. They even have boxes for clothes that have to be hung up that have a bar in them to hang clothes up on with hangers. It’s basically a last resort thing lol.

Ask it from someone who just moved or just unpacked their stuffs. Maybe you can ask around your neighborhood or community to find newcomers who are getting rid of boxes they just used. Maybe you can help them unpack and as a favor you can have their boxes!!
